Managing Negative Beliefs
Identify and address your recovery obstacles to foster growth, with support and strategies for overcoming them.
Start by identifying obstacles by doing a list with the headings below:
An obstacle to recovery isโฆ
I can overcome it byโฆ
With the help ofโฆ
Obstacles are a normal part of the recovery process and are primarily opportunities for growth. If you can embrace these opportunities for growth, you will be less likely to fear that your journey will be in vain. Your recovery must include both protection and a willingness to risk opening up. Think of it like a flower that closes at night for protection but unfurls again the next day.
Each person will have specific anxieties and concerns that are unique to them, and it is normal to have mixed feelings about change.
EXERCISE: My obstacles to recovery.
Think about some of the potential obstacles that you might encounter on your journey to recovery, and then list ways you could overcome them along with people who might be able to help you (such as your partner, family, friends or professionals).
