Exploring The Feeling of Safety

Feeling safe helps people to regulate their moods and emotions so that they can improve their wellbeing and quality of life. However, feeling safe is a different experience for everyone and everybody has their own ideas about what it should be like. This exercise will help you to work out what feeling safe means for you.

EXERCISE

On a sheet of paper write as many things as you can think of for each heading.

What safety feels like for me isโ€ฆ

If the feeling of safety had a name, I would call itโ€ฆ

If the feeling of safety had a colour, it would beโ€ฆ

If the feeling of safety had a shape, it would beโ€ฆ

If the feeling of safety was an animal, it would beโ€ฆ

If the feeling of safety was an object or metaphor, it would beโ€ฆ

If the feeling of safety could talk, it would sound likeโ€ฆ

In the first outline above, colour in different parts of the body where you usually feel calm.

You can use different colours or shades to represent the intensity of feelings. If you like, you can also colour in where you feel love and sadness on the other two graphics.
